在考試時看到有一題出現英文中幾個具有許可意義的字眼比較

查了一下，除了allowance以外，似乎沒有很明確的分別

approve of

(1) If you approve of an action, event, or suggestion, you like it or are pleased about it.

(2) If someone in a position of authority approves a plan or idea, they formally agree to it and say that it can happen.

如果某個在位者認同一個計畫或主意，他們形式上贊成實施那個計畫

approve of有認同、批准的意思，尤其是指當權者或是在上位者的授權或認可

allow = permit = let

allow 人 to do something = let人 do something

(1) If someone is allowed to do something, it is all right for them to do it and they will not get into trouble.

(2) If you allow something to happen, you do not prevent it.

如果你同意某事發生，你不會去阻止它

allow的「認同」範圍比approve廣

allow的名詞雖然是allowance，但allowance這個字較常作解釋為：津貼; 寬放; 容許餘地

作為名詞：

consent = permission to do something 做某事的許可

permission = approval to do something 批准做某事

approval = the formal act of approving 正式批准的行為

例句：

We have accorded him PERMISSION, with the CONSENT of the district-attorney and of the counsel for the prisoner.

在取得檢察官和被告律師同意的情況下，我們允許他走了。

permission is authorization granted to do something.

I gained my father's permission to use the car.

我獲得爸爸的同意用車——僅表示獲得批准。

My request to use the car was confirmed.

我要用車的要求得到確認/批准——指之前提出過要求，現在得到證實。
